Tri-Band Mobile Phones - The Facts

What is the point of tri-band mobile phones? Good question - in fact, this requires us to have a quick run through the "how" of the working of cellular phone both in the United States and all around the globe.

Radio waves are used by cellular phones to transmit conversations. Just as in the case of your favourite local radio stations, there is a need to regulate, license and monitor the different frequencies being used. There are a wide variety of services and systems reliant upon communication via radio wave frequencies and if this were not heavily regulated our methods of orderly existence would be heavily impacted!

In terms of cell phones, those that operate on the more popular GSM network utilize different frequencies. In the United States, these frequency bands are 850 MHz and 1900 MHz. In reality, transmission occurs in narrow bands either side of the actual figure. Throughout the rest of the world, on the other hand, GSM phones operate within the ranges of 900 and 1800 MHz. Phones that work within more than two of these ranges are now very popular and if you are traveling internationally tri-band mobile phones are a better choice.

Tri-band mobile phones are a step up from the usual dual-band phones which we all know and have loved. When selecting, however, you must make sure that the bands featured by the phone in question correspond with the bands prevalent in the countries that you are visiting, as it's not as simple as you might think. For example, 900/1800/1900 are OK in the US but more ideal internationally, whilst 850/1800/1900 are typically excellent in the US but not very good internationally.

Until recently, tri-band mobile phones were seen as cutting edge. Quad-band mobile phones which, as the name implies, operate in all four of the aforementioned frequencies were seen as being very expensive. With the advent of 3G communications - referring to the third generation development of cellular technology - high-speed data services have arrived that can utilize yet another band - 2100 MHz.

When selecting one of the tri-band mobile phones, consider all your options. In addition to ensuring that the phone you choose operates on the correct frequencies for your needs, you should decide whether or not to move up to the latest and cutting edge technologies and effectively bypass tri-band for quad-band and for 3G connectivity.

Always keep on top of developments in the industry and be sure that, as the business is so competitive, all the major players must keep on top of their game and will generally try to "recommend" the latest in technology to you.
